West Side Story returns to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour

Get ready to snap your fingers, tap your toes and experience the magic of Broadway in Sydney as Opera Australia presents the electrifying musical extravaganza West Side Story – making its triumphant return to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage in 2024.

The 2019 production of West Side Story, if you were fortunate enough to grab seats, was an absolute smash hit. With record-breaking ticket sales and rave reviews, it's no wonder this show stole the hearts of over 65,000 theatre and musical buffs.

Directed by the incomparable Francesca Zambello, West Side Story promises to once again whisk audiences away to the bustling streets of New York City, complete with iconic songs, heart-pounding dance numbers, and enough drama to fill the harbour twice over.

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece will once again take centre stage, accompanied by Jerome Robbins' legendary choreography – and this year, we were fortunate enough to be able to pose a few pre-performance questions to none other than Guy Simpson, the show’s musical director, and the all-singing, all-dancing Wayne Scott Kermond, who is playing “Doc” onstage.

Let’s raise the curtain and see what they have to say!

Guy Simpson

Guy Simpson, a seasoned musical director with nearly 45 years of experience, boasts an illustrious career spanning global productions. Notably, his involvement with iconic shows like Miss Saigon and The Phantom of the Opera has taken him across continents, from Australia to Asia and beyond. Simpson's extensive repertoire includes serving as Musical Supervisor and Director for Opera Australia's acclaimed productions such as Evita, My Fair Lady, and of course West Side Story. Additionally, his contributions as an orchestrator and producer of cast recordings further solidify his stature in the musical theatre realm. With credits ranging from beloved classics like Les Misérables to contemporary hits like Muriel's Wedding, Simpson's versatile talent continues to enrich the world of musical theatre on an international scale.

OverSixty: What memories do you have of your first time working on West Side Story – when was it and what was the experience like?

Guy: “I was a rehearsal pianist for the 1983 production of West Side Story. The conductor was Dobbs Franks, who came from the US to conduct the first production of the show in 1960. So I was lucky to learn the show from him. I wasn’t in the orchestra and had tickets to watch opening night but during the afternoon of that day I received a call to play in the orchestra that night because the pianist was unwell. I’ll never forget that! Since then I have conducted three seasons of the show and learn more and more about it each time.”

OverSixty: What were Bernstein’s influences and what impact did Bernstein’s score have when the musical first premiered? And why do you think it remains so recognised today?

Guy: “Bernstein was influenced by many things. There is an excellent article by Debra Lew Harder that outlines these influences. I love the combination of Jewish themes, Puerto Rican rhythm, Mexican dance music and of course American jazz. His classical roots also come in here – especially the music of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. The genius is Bernstein's ability to blend all this into a score that tells the story so brilliantly."

OverSixty: What’s your favourite moment in the music that audiences might not always notice but could listen out for?

Guy: I like what is known as ‘THE BALCONY SCENE’. Most people will know it as the iconic love duet ‘TONIGHT’. In the show this scene moves between spoken dialogue (with underscoring), into the song and back into dialogue in a wonderfully cohesive way. It is so well crafted and is quite a challenge for the conductor to fit the music with the dialogue in a seamless way. I also love the scene in the bridal shop that includes the song ‘ONE HAND ONE HEART’.

Wayne Scott Kermond

Wayne Scott Kermond, hailing from a rich lineage of Australian Vaudeville performers, epitomises the essence of musical theatre, comedy and cabaret. With a repertoire spanning from Anything Goes to Hairspray, including acclaimed performances in several productions of West Side Story, Kermond's versatility shines through. Additionally, he's showcased his creative prowess as the creator and star of captivating cabaret shows such as Candy Man and Jive Junkys. Beyond the stage, Kermond's talents extend to film, where he's contributed to projects like Happy Feet 1 & 2, and as a respected scriptwriter and director for various musicals, cabarets and corporate events. With accolades including a Green Room Award and Mo Award, alongside nominations for Helpmann Awards, Kermond's exceptional abilities and esteemed showbiz heritage solidify his status as an extraordinary Australian talent.

OverSixty: You and Guy first worked on this musical 40 years ago, how does it feel to be coming back together on the Handa Opera version?

Wayne: “I first performed in West Side Story at the old Her Majesty’s Theatre (Sydney), 40 years ago playing the youngest member of the Jets gang, ‘Baby John’, and then again in another fabulous production touring Australia / New Zealand in the mid-nineties playing Arab. And so it was lovely to be reminded by Guy on the first day of rehearsals for this season how special it is to us both, here we are, doing it again, just a little greyer."

“We shared a few laughs about ‘where did that time go?’, and how ‘young’ we still look after all these years. It’s so great to work with Guy again, I think the last show we did together was Chicago, back in the late nineties. So with Guy's huge amount of expertise and experience at the helm as our Musical Director the show is in great hands. Wait till you hear the amazing Orchestra.”

OverSixty: What about this musical’s story, lyrics, etc resonate with you and why do you think it keeps being seen on stage? Can it appeal to all ages?

Wayne: “West Side Story is as iconic to music theatre as Swan Lake is to ballet. All great musicals such as West Side have to have a great love story; West Side certainly has that. And to add to that, also an incredible score, dynamic original choreography and a beautifully written book makes it a triple threat. That's why it stands the test of time – it's an inter-generational piece, whose story and message still stands today, which is the reason why I’m now getting the opportunity to play an adult character ‘Doc’ in this OA production 40 years later, as it will be for another artist, in another 40 years' time.”

OverSixty: What’s your favourite moment in the show and why?

Wayne: It is very difficult to say there is a favourite moment as there are so many. The whole journey of the show is something everyone who loves theatre should experience. The Prologue, Dance at the Gym, America, Cool, Tonight, Something's Comin, and not forgetting the Quintet powerhouse... Every part of this show is special, whether you're seeing the show for the first time or for the tenth time, it’s exhilarating, poignant and moving."

“It’s especially wonderful for me to have been given the opportunity to revisit the show, after all these years later as a performer. And it’s very exciting to watch another generation of performers being given the opportunity to experience such an exceptional piece of theatre.”

So, mark your calendars, Sydney-siders, because Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is about to serve up a theatrical experience like no other. With world-class performances, breathtaking views of the harbour, and enough fireworks to make New Year's Eve jealous, this is one event you won't want to miss.

So grab your tickets, grab your friends, and get ready to experience the magic of West Side Story like never before. See you at the opera!

For more information and ticket sales, check out opera.org.au/harbour

All images: Supplied

Mariah Carey slapped with multi-million dollar lawsuit over hit festive song

Mariah Carey is facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit over her hit festive song, as another musician has come forward claiming she plagiarised an original work.

Carey’s song All I Want For Christmas Is You has long been a staple of December, and has sold over 10 million copies since its 1994 release.

However, Andy Stone, lead vocalist of Vince Vance and the Valiants, claims Carey infringed on his copyright.

Stone co-wrote a song, which has the same title as Carey’s smash hit, in 1989 to which he claims Carey and her team of copying his song’s “compositional structure,” according to the complaint obtained by Fox News Digital.

The court documents state that Carey “directly” copied lyrics from Stone’s 1989 hit and “approximately 50 per cent” of the song is copyright infringement.

Stone went on to claim that Carey and her team “undoubtedly” had access to his version of All I Want For Christmas is You due to its “wide commercial and cultural success.”

Stone’s track charted on Billboard for years, with the band even performing the track at the White House in 1994 - the same year Carey’s festive song was released.

“Carey has capitalised on the success of her infringing work,” Stone’s complaint alleged.

“All I Want For Christmas is You has become a ubiquitous part of popular culture, and Carey’s name has become synonymous with the season.”

Stone first sued Carey over the copyright issue in June 2022 in a Louisiana court before dropping the claim five months later.

Wayne Carey's flippant comment on past cheating scandal

Wayne Carey has made a series of astonishing remarks about the high profile affair that ended his career, as he engaged with cheeky fans on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The exchange began when the former AFL player made a seemingly innocent statement about AFL teams trading players.

“If your club gets a player that plays your position? That should always be used as motivation to have the best preseason you have ever had,” the former Kangaroos star wrote.

“Difference between being good and great? Absolutely nothing beats hard work #tradeshow.”

But fans were quick to recall Carey changing clubs back in 2002, as one person cheekily asked, “How come you traded clubs?” to which Carey replied, “Really?”

“Didn’t work hard enough?” another added to the banter.

Many others added to the virtual pile on, until one fan recalled the reason why he had to change clubs 21 years ago.

“He slept with his teammate's wife!” the account wrote, to which the footy star responded with “3 times”.

The rogue posts didn't stop there, as the same fan then jokingly asked if the footy star was “back on the bags”, referring to Carey's incident at Perth Crown Casinowhen a suspicious looking bag of white powder fell out of his pocket while he was gambling.

On last year’s season of SAS Australia, Carey spoke candidly about the affair scandal.

“I slept with a teammate’s wife. It’s haunted me for 20 years,” he said at the time.

“My integrity will always be questioned. I’m not trying to prove anything to the public — it’s to myself."

“People can change. They evolve. Hopefully this can help me.”

Aussie author of "Puberty Blues" dies at 64

Gabrielle Carey, co-author of the iconic novel Puberty Blues, has passed away at 64.

The news was reportedly broken by Carey’s old friend and co-writer Kathy Lette, who was the other half of the creative powerhouse that brought Puberty Blues to life.

In a post to social media, Lette shared a throwback picture of the pair in their younger years, and wrote, “I’m deeply saddened by the tragic news about my old friend Gabrielle Carey.

“I have such happy memories of our teenage years. They were halcyon, heady days full of love, laughter and adventure.

“We made some mischief and broke some barriers by writing Puberty Blues – our raw, earthy take on the brutal treatment of young women in the Australian surfing scene which is sadly, still so relevant.

“My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.”

I’m deeply saddened by the tragic news about my old friend Gabrielle Carey. You were a sister in the cause of mental illness, its impact & our children. I’m enriched for having known you,” one supporter wrote. “Thank you.”

“Writer - Reader - Intellectual - Joycean (fanatical) - Elizabeth von Arnim devotee - Avid Gardener - Rose Petal Jam Maker - Football Follower - Kayaker - Yogi - Joker - Irrepressible Spirit - Hobbit - Underground Writer - My Friend,” friend and fellow writer Yumna Kassab wrote. “I will always miss you.”

“So sorry for your loss,” one fan said in response to Lette’s tweet. “You have no idea how much as a girl growing up in a coastal town with a surfing scene I understood Puberty Blues. I saw it every day. You & Gabrielle laid it all bare & made girls stand up for themselves. Thank you”.

“My deepest condolences Kathy,” another offered. “The two of you wrote something so treasured by Gen X girls. It was our ‘how to say no guide’. Our Teen handbook. But it still let us live our lives & learn as we went. RIP Gabrielle Carey.”

Images: Facebook

How Mariah Carey’s Christmas song from 1994 keeps the festive spirit alive

As the festive season looms, it’s almost time for decorations, presents and Christmas music.

But for some, the Christmas playlist has been on a high rotation for the last few months, featuring one song specifically: Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You.

This 1994 track has long been a staple in any decent festive playlist, and is only continuing to gain popularity.

However, according to an NBC analysis of last.fm data, the yuletide song, which was once reserved for December only, has been played by eager Mariah fans and Christmas fiends as early as October.

With the last.fm data spanning over 15 years, the song began encroaching in November around 2015, and has only continued to be played sooner throughout recent years.

Since 2018, the track has started its annual emergence as early as November, outshining the spooky Halloween season.

Some believe that the song has shifted through time to reflect when people begin their holiday shopping, and are infiltrated with the Christmas spirit of festive tunes being played in malls.

Other people, including associate professor of musicology Nate Sloan, think the presence of All I Want for Christmas Is You is more about the comfort we feel from Christmastime.

“Charts are dominated by the newest hit single, and the appetite for new music is the drive for climbing the charts — the only exception to that is Christmas,” Nate Sloan said.

“It has very much to do with the emotional support we draw from this holiday.”

Since the song’s 1994 debut, it has taken on a life of its own and become one of the most successful holiday singles ever released.

The song has spawned multiple covers and featured in numerous Christmas films, making it a key associative factor to the festive season.

For these reasons, Nate Sloan believes it's the song’s emotional ties to the festive season that keeps eager listeners coming back at the end of each year.

He said, “It becomes a sonic marker of being around family and warmth and time off.”

“Who doesn’t want to return to that feeling, that song and that season earlier and earlier?”

Billionaire James Packer and pop star Mariah Carey dated for 18 months before their highly-publicised engagement was called off in 2016.

Now, the Australian businessman has candidly discussed the couple’s failed relationship in his new biography The Price of Fortune: The Untold Story of Being James Packer.

According to an excerpt published by The Daily Telegraph, the 51-year-old says he became “toxic” at the time of their split.

“By the time the Israel so-called Case 1000 had become public, the China arrests, and Crown's sale of Macau had occurred and the breakup with Mariah had happened, I had become toxic,” he says in his book.

James also denies leaking any details of Mariah’s settlement after the pair’s failed engagement.

“I had absolutely nothing to do with the story,” he says.

The superstar singer reportedly received AUD$70 million after the breakup for an “inconvenience fee”.

She was initially “poised to accept $7 million to walk away” before allegedly increasing the figure, reported The Daily Telegraph.

In another published excerpt, James said his relationship was initially “fun”, but his mental health was in a dark place.

James also describes his former fiancée as “insanely bright”.

However, underneath the surface, he was struggling mentally with the casino mogul later being admitted to a rehabilitation centre in March 2018.

In February 2016, just a month after he proposed to Mariah with an AUD$12.7 million 35-carat ring, he admitted he was not coping well.

The toll eventually became too much for James and the relationship collapsed, with the couple announcing their split in October 2016.

After their split, Mariah sold the engagement ring for a fraction of the price to an LA jeweller for $2.78 million, reported the New York Post.

The singer’s publicist told Page Six at the time: “Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity.”

They added, “That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend.”

Recently, Seven Network owner Kerry Stokes’ role in the breakdown of the high-profile engagement was also revealed.

As James struggled to cope with his business and personal life, Mr Stokes stepped in and took charge of his friend’s private affairs in 2016.

Mr Stokes encouraged James to spend time alone in Israel so that his friend could improve his mental health before going ahead with his big day.

“Away from all the controversies and the pressures and the intensities ... My concern was that (he and Mariah) were both in bad places and that James needed some space,” Mr Stokes said.

“I did postpone his wedding ... James was upset at not seeing her. But he wasn't sure. He was obviously engaged to her. He was obviously emotionally involved. The fact it was postponed, he was happy to get the chance to get himself into a better place.”

James still wanted to marry Mariah after his time in Israel but the relationship “fell apart”.

Later, James told The Australian that their relationship was a “mistake” for both of them.

"It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music."

A post shared by Mariah Carey (@mariahcarey) on Apr 11, 2018 at 3:58am PDT

Carey says she's now in therapy to help manage her bipolar disorder II, which involves periods of depression as well as hypomania, but is considered less severe than bipolar disorder I.

"For a long time I thought I had a severe sleep disorder," added Carey. "But it wasn’t normal insomnia and I wasn’t lying awake counting sheep. I was working and working and working … I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania. Eventually I would just hit a wall. I guess my depressive episodes were characterized by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad — even guilty that I wasn’t doing what I needed to be doing for my career."

Carey told People she's now focused on finding the right balance of treatment that works for her.

"I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good," she said. "It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important."

Googlebox’s Wayne and Tom open up about their three children

If you’re a fan of Googlebox Australia you would already been familiar with the hilarious commentary provided by Wayne and Tom. But did you know the couple have three children?

In an interview with TV Week, the duo, who have been together for 17 years, open up about their pride and joy – daughters Jade, 27, and Tegan, 24, and son Zac, 26.

“We have three beautiful children,” Wayne, 47, says, adding that he couldn’t be more proud of all of them.

“Jade is successful in her career as a medical scientist and Tegan and Zac are busy chasing their dreams.”

With the nation in the middle of a same-sex marriage postal plebiscite, Wayne and Tom have been particularly affected by some of the misinformation thrown around.

“For us to be told we can’t be good parents because we’re two men is heartbreaking,” Tom, 49, says.

“We’ve done the best any parent can do. We’ve supported our children, taught them morals, taken them to soccer practice and dancing lessons.”

Since the success of the hit realty TV series, now in its fourth season, Tom and Wayne say they’ve also become role models for young people struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.

“We get private messages from young people, asking how they can overcome the negativity,” Tom reveals.

“It brings back a lot of memories for me. Growing up in the ’80s, I used to hear my family say that gay people should be put down. So I’ve been through it and I can lend a hand.”

Wayne believes that the Gogglebox has also allowed them to introduce Australia to the new normal, breaking down barriers along the way.

“Whether you’re a four-person family with a mum, dad and kids, or a gay family living under one roof, everyone is really the same,” he says.

The couple says if Australia legalises same-sex marriage they’ll be getting married.

“We would have a wedding for our children and friends,” Tom explains. “We’ve been together for 17 years, so as far as we’re concerned, we’re [already] married.”

Wayne adds, “I’d like a small beach wedding and invite friends and family.”
